
Young Riders Program
This ones for the kids! Ages 6 to 11, with coaching groups split into 6 to 8, and 9 to 11 year olds. This program offers a supportive learning environment to establish the foundation for a lifetime of fun in the mountains!

About
Group sizes are small and the program is run by a team of experienced coaches and outdoor education professionals. Our maximum ratio of young riders to coaches is 6:1, so each rider will have lots of 1 on 1 time with their coaches!

Skill Level

Equipment
Mandatory: A mountain bike, helmet, closed toed shoes (preferably with flat soles), protective equipment, and a backpack. Optional, but recommended: Snacks and water, clothing layers, bug spray, sunscreen, etc.
Program Details
This program is an introduction to the fundamentals of mountain biking in a fun and exciting environment.
- Participants will learn effective operation of their controls, proper body position and the basics of cornering.
- This program runs from Monday to Thursday. Each day consists of 3 hours of coaching.
- Ages 6-8 ride from 9am to 12pm - Coaching will be a blend of games, drills and application of skills on single track and dirt environments.
- Ages 9-11 ride from 1pm to 4pm - Coaching will include more advanced skills, but the focus is still primarily on having fun!
By the end of the program participants will:
- Ride confidently on simple to intermediate mountain bike trails.
- Feel ready to progress with a solid understanding of basic safely and skills.
- Have an appreciation for the outdoors and the many health & wellness benefits mountain biking can provide.
- Make new friends and connections with their peers.
- Increase their overall fitness and stamina.
9-11 years old will also:
- Be comfortable using the front brake, dynamic body position and using trail features such and berms.
- Be introduced to more advanced skills such as pressure control, using trail features such as rollers and picking lines on intermediate terrain.
IMPORTANT PREREQUISITES:
- Ages 6-8: Participants must know how to confidently ride a pedal bike with no training wheels and be capable of riding on dirt trails. Participant's bike must have gears and front & rear hand brakes.
- Ages 9-11: Participants must know how to confidently ride a pedal bike on basic dirt trails/single track. Participant's bike must have gears, front & rear hand brakes and dirt specific tires. Disc brakes are recommended.

Locations
Sessions will take place at either Trinity Hills or Fish Creek Park. The final day of each program will introduce riders to local bike parks located nearby. Trinity Hills will explore the Montgomery Bike Park and Fish Creek sessions will visit the Fish Creek Pump Track.

There is a playground with a covered picnic area - this is where participants will be picked up and dropped off. There is parking on the side of the road immediately adjacent to the playground.

Participants will meet in Shannon Terrace parking lot. The lot is small so you will see the coaches with their YYCMTB jerseys when you pull in.

Pricing + Dates
Each 4 day program is $315 + GST per participant.
2025 Dates:
- July 7th to 10th - Trinity Hills
- July 14th to 17th - Fish Creek Park
- July 21st to 24th - Trinity Hills
- August 11th to 14th - Fish Creek
- August 18th to 21st - Trinity Hills
Upon registering, you will receive an email from us with more details. We use TeamSnap to communicate with parents about meeting spots, changes dues to weather and any other updates we need to get to parents before a ride. There will be instructions on how to sign up in our email.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the required equipment?
- A well-tuned bike
- Proper fitting cycling helmet
- Closed toed shoes, preferably something with flat soles.
- Other protective equipment like knee pads, elbow pads and sunglasses are recommended!
- Participants must have a way to carry their own snacks and water. (e.g. backpack or bottle cage and bike bag)
What else should my child bring?
- Snacks and water. (Food sharing is not allowed)
- Warm, lightweight layers.
- Waterproof shell / jacket.
- Sun screen and bug spray.
Coaches will have tools and first aid supplies to deal with with minor bike repairs & injuries.
What is the cancelation policy?
You can find our full cancellation and refund policy on our Terms and Conditions page. We require 48 hours notice before the session starts to provide a refund in the event of a cancellation. Extra notice is greatly appreciated!
What happens if it rains?
Sessions run rain or shine! But if we feel that conditions are too hazardous, we'll reschedule.
