Description

Learn to Ride the Skills Park

Being able to ride trail features like jumps, berms and rollers is a great skill to have when mountain biking anywhere, and gives you a great base for when you’re heading to bigger bike parks in places like Silver Star and Whistler. As more trails like Merlin View and 7-27 get built in the Calgary area, those skills are going to be more and more important to have.

In 2017, YYCMTB is offering the Bike Park Series at the Chestermere Family Bike Park.

What You Will Learn

Sessions are progressive and will focus on:

  • Pump Track – Body position, cornering, timing
  • Skills Loop – Body position, balance, speed control, bike control
  • Dirt Jumps – Body position, speed control, take-off and landing, control in the air

Equipment

As with all YYCMTB riding activities, our client’s safety is a top priority. HELMETS ARE MANDATORY. Additional Personal Protective Equipment is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED:

  • Kneepads
  • Gloves
  • Elbow pads
  • Closed-toe shoes [riding in flip-flops or sandals is a bad idea]

Most mountain bikes will handle the terrain in the bike park [although DH bikes are not ideal]. BMX bikes work great. Regardless of the bike type, it should be in good working condition. If you normally use clipless [i.e. SPD] pedals, you might want to use flat pedals instead [here’s some info on the different types of pedals].

Note to parents: Bikes must NOT have training wheels. If your child cannot ride without training wheels, they are not ready for this program.
